The Akron RubberDucks and 7 17 Credit Union announce Canal Park will become 7 17 Credit Union Park after the conclusion of the 2025 season.
“7 17 Credit Union has been an amazing partner for us and the Akron community,” RubberDucks President and General Manager Jim Pfander said. “This special naming rights partnership allows us to keep offering $5 tickets and $2.50 hot dogs for every game. We are excited to further our partnership with 7 17 Credit Union because much like our organization, they believe in the power of this great community we live, work and play in every day. We look forward to welcoming fans to 7 17 Credit Union Park in 2026.”
7 17 Credit Union is the Official Credit Union of the Akron RubberDucks and earlier this season announced a co-branded credit card. A portion of every transaction with the co-branded card goes to support an annual scholarship given away jointly by the RubberDucks and 7 17 Credit Union.
This partnership between the RubberDucks and 7 17 Credit Union started in 2025, but due to both organizations shared value of community and work to help Akron grow, the extension of the partnership to include the naming right agreement came about quickly. The naming rights agreement runs through the end of the 2031 season.
“For nearly 70 years, 7 17 Credit Union has been helping members build financial strength and a sense of belonging,” 7 17 Credit Union President & CEO John Demmler said. “This partnership is about more than putting our name on a ballpark—it’s about putting down roots in Akron and becoming part of the fabric of this community. Just as this ballpark has brought people together for decades, we look forward to making 7 17 Credit Union Park a place where families, friends, and neighbors feel at home. At 7 17, we believe in banking with purpose—helping others achieve financial wellness and creating opportunities that strengthen the communities we serve.”
7 17 Credit Union Park opened in 1997 and it was the vision of then Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic to build a ballpark on Main Street that would serve as a catalyst for reshaping downtown Akron and improving the lives of its residents. Under the ownership of Fast Forward Sports Group, led by Ken Babby, $18 million of private money has been invested into 7 17 Credit Union Park. Thanks to a great partnership with the City of Akron and current Mayor Shammas Malik, the RubberDucks have continued to make 7 17 Credit Union Park the epicenter of Affordable. Family. Fun. for multiple generations of Akronites. Earlier this season, the RubberDucks welcomed their 10-millionth fan through the gates of the ballpark since opening on April 10, 1997.
"7 17 Credit Union has a strong history in Northeast Ohio and their expansion into Akron means new jobs, new investment, and more opportunities for our residents and small businesses," said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. "The RubberDucks have been a catalyst for growth in our downtown corridor and our ballpark on Main Street has provided affordable family fun for decades. We're excited for the name change to 7 17 Credit Union Park and we are committed to working alongside 7 17 Credit Union to grow a stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive economy."
The ballpark name change is subject to the approval of Major League Baseball and the Akron City Council. The partnership was developed collaboratively between the Akron RubberDucks, 7 17 Credit Union, Innovative Partnerships Group, and the City of Akron.
7 17 Credit Union is the largest in Northeast Ohio with 13 branch locations and more than 120,000 members. Established in 1957, we’re proud to help people improve their lives financially and support the communities we serve. Anyone is eligible to open accounts with 7 17. 7 17 Credit Union and Akron RubberDucks Celebrate New Partnership and Community Spirit at Canal Park
Community, connection, and hometown pride took center stage as 7 17 Credit Union and the Akron RubberDucks celebrated their ongoing partnership dedicated to making a meaningful impact across the Greater Akron area. As the Official Credit Union of the Akron RubberDucks, 7 17 is working alongside the team to bring added value and financial wellness to the forefront of the fan experience.
During a special evening on Thursday at Canal Park, co-hosted by 7 17 Credit Union and the Akron RubberDucks, fans, local leaders, and civic partners came together in celebration of shared values and a shared vision, all while enjoying the excitement of the RubberDucks’ matchup against the Erie SeaWolves.
“Bringing people together is at the heart of what we do—and last night’s celebration of our partnership with 7 17 Credit Union made that even more powerful,” said RubberDucks President and General Manager Jim Pfander. “They’re more than a financial institution—they lead with purpose and people. Their commitment to community perfectly reflects the values we live by at the RubberDucks.”
The crowd was treated to a memorable appearance by Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch, symbolizing the spirit of teamwork and civic pride that defines Akron.
7 17 Credit Union also used the occasion to unveil the new Akron RubberDucks Visa® Credit Card — a card designed with fans in mind. With a low starting APR of just 7.17% and no fees for balance transfers, cash advances, or annual use, the card offers real value. Even more impactful, 7.17 cents from every transaction goes directly to local nonprofit programs supported by the RubberDucks, creating a built-in way to give back with every purchase.
“This partnership is about more than branding—it’s about building something meaningful together,” said John Demmler, President and CEO of 7 17 Credit Union. “We’re honored to work alongside the RubberDucks to support initiatives that matter in the community, while offering real financial benefits to the people who live here.”
7 17 Credit Union highlighted its Workplace Partner Program, which provides exclusive benefits to local employees and their families, most notably, significant mortgage savings through waived closing costs, making homeownership more accessible across the region.
Building on that commitment, the credit union emphasized a planned investment of approximately $100 million to support affordable housing initiatives throughout Northeast Ohio. In addition, 7 17 is preparing a $50 million investment in Greater Akron over the next five years, which includes opening nine full-service branches and ten micro-branches. These locations will feature Personal Teller Machines (PTMs), enabling members to connect directly with local banking representatives for a more personalized and convenient experience.
“We’re proud to be part of something that brings people together,” Demmler added. “From money matters to memories at the ballpark, it’s all about supporting the community.”
Thanks to the support of 7 17 Credit Union, fans can enjoy every moment of RubberDucks baseball all season long—whether cheering from the stands at Canal Park or tuning in on the road—by listening live on 640 WHLO.

As part of this collaboration, 7 17 will offer exciting giveaways and special savings opportunities for guests at the ballpark with a year-round focus on financial wellness. For our youngest members, our fan favorite, Dollar Dog will engage with the children, announcing a revamped 7 17 Dollar Dog Club that will offer special incentives, including free tickets to Scrappers’ home games for new and existing account holders.
To enhance this collaboration even further, Scrappers fans can now have their own Mahoning Valley Scrappers credit card to use at the ballpark or anywhere. With every swipe and purchase, 7 17 will donate 7.17 cents to the Scrappers for special programming such as youth outreach and ballpark improvements. Across thousands of transactions, that can add up to significant dollars to make a real impact. Cardholders will see benefits like a $25 gift card if they apply within 30 days, pricing incentives, and more.
In addition to giving back to local organizations, the 7 17 Credit Union VISA® affinity cards come with some of the lowest rates in the country and a low 7.17% introductory rate for all purchases and balance transfers for the first three months. Fans can apply for the MV Scrappers credit card here.
7 17 Credit Union President and CEO John Demmler said it best: “This is a tangible way to give back to our communities with everyday purchases and illustrates how banking local can send ripples of positive change throughout our community, with the simplicity of every swipe.”

City of Youngstown and 717 Credit Union Officially Open Funding Applications for Residential Property Improvement Programs
The programs will provide low interest loans and grant opportunities to Youngstown homeowners and landlords to make needed repairs and renovations, helping enhance neighborhoods across the city.
YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The City of Youngstown, in partnership with 717 Credit Union, is taking a significant step forward in its mission to promote affordable homeownership and neighborhood revitalization with the launch of the Residential Property Improvement Programs. That means applications for the Residential Façade Loan and Residential Façade Grant Program, and the Landlord Loan Program are now open.
The new initiative is supported by $5 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act and will assist homeowners in improving the exterior of their homes and give landlords an opportunity to update their properties by providing qualified candidates access to funding.
Interested homeowners can view qualification details and apply directly through 717 Credit Union at www.717cu.com/youngstown-residential-property-improvement-programs.
“Finding affordable pathways for homeowners and improving our neighborhoods are priorities of my administration, and with the help of 717 Credit Union we are seeing plans become reality,” said Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown. “The Façade Loan and Grant Programs not only serves as a critical vehicle for so many in our city to make needed improvements to their homes and increase the value in their homes, but it’s a step towards enhancing the perception of our neighborhoods and giving residents a level of pride.”
The Residential Loan and Grant Program offers qualifying homeowners low-interest loans of up to $10,000 at a 1% interest rate for five years, or a dollar-for-dollar match up to $10,000. These funds can be used for exterior improvements such as painting, window replacements, siding, and repairs to sidewalks, driveways, steps, and garages.
The Landlord Loan Program allows eligible landlords to apply for a five year, 2% interest loan for each repaired or renovated property. Each individual property cannot exceed $50,000, landlords applying for multiple properties cannot exceed $100,000 total. Projects using funds from the loan must address any current City of Youngstown code violations, if applicable.
“Mayor Brown and his administration have taken the lead in addressing Youngstown’s housing needs,” said John Demmler, President and CEO of 7 17 Credit Union. “The Youngstown Residential Property Improvement Programs are designed to enhance our communities by improving the quality of housing throughout the city.” Demmler added, “At 7 17 Credit Union, we believe that strong communities begin at home. By partnering with the City of Youngstown, we're giving residents and landlords the tools to reimagine what’s possible for their properties and, ultimately, their communities. We’re proud to be part of this important step forward.”
The Residential Façade Loan Program is part of the City of Youngstown’s broader $13 million housing initiative being administered by 717 Credit Union aimed at improving housing across the city, offering affordable financing options to homeowners and landlords for property improvements and developments.

7 17 Credit Union to administer $13 Million to improve
Youngstown Housing
7 17 Credit Union was selected by the city of Youngstown to administer $13 million in America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds across three programs. These programs are designed to improve housing across the city.
For the first program, the city of Youngstown allocated $8 million for the construction and/or rehabilitation of quality affordable housing. 7 17 proposed to parlay the $8 million into not only millions of dollars of housing development, but also $35 million worth of discounted mortgage financing.
To begin development, 7 17 will create a $5 million revolving commercial development fund to be used for developers to rehab vacant downtown buildings into residential condos, to build homes on vacant lots, and to develop neighborhoods. After renovation or construction, the units would be sold to individual buyers and the funds recuperated to be invested in additional projects.
Purchasers of the homes will receive interest rate reductions subsidized by the ARPA funds. The initiative has been dubbed the Youngstown Affordable Loan Program and will provide $35 million in reduced rate mortgage loans. Financing includes a 2% rate reduction and no closing costs. Through the program, based on current rates, the principal and interest payment on a $100,000 loan would be less than $500 per month. This makes home ownership more affordable than the average rent payment.
“The dream of home ownership is increasingly out of reach for many individuals,” said John Demmler, 7 17 Credit Union President and CEO. “The Youngstown Affordable Loan Program will make that dream achievable for many Youngstown families. This program directly aligns with our mission of helping people improve their lives financially and supporting the communities we serve.”
The second program will provide low-interest loans of up to $10,000 or a dollar-for-dollar match up to $10,000 to qualifying homeowners in Youngstown to improve and update the exterior of their homes and address any currently cited or potential code violations against the property. There are $3 million in ARPA funds allocated to this Residential Façade Program. The intention of the program is to stabilize and increase the value of homes throughout the city, creating neighborhoods that are visually inviting and representative of residents’ pride.
The final program has been allocated $2 million of ARPA funds for a revolving loan fund to provide resources to landlords to undertake renovations, repairs or address code violations. Eligible landlords can apply for a low interest loan of up to $50,000 for each repaired or renovated property. A single landlord is capped at $100,000. The terms of the loan includes a low, two-percent interest rate for up to a 60 month term. Landlords that wish to apply for the Landlord Revolving Loan Fund program are to apply through 7 17 Credit Union.
“We are proud to partner with 717 Credit Union, who has proven to be a true community champion, for such an important initiative,” said Youngstown Mayor Jamael “Tito” Brown. “Helping Youngstown residents achieve the dream of home ownership represents a major step forward for so many in our community.”
It is anticipated that the Residential Façade Program and the Landlord Revolving Loan Fund programs will be available late winter. The Youngstown Affordable Loan program will be available in the spring.
To further assist with enhancing rental properties, 7 17 is also developing a loan refinance program for owners of single or multiple unit rental properties. A refinance of existing debt may offer a lower monthly payment. A reduction in a monthly payment can supplement the repayment of the Landlord Revolving Loan Fund loans.

2024 Press Releases
7 17 Credit Union Launches “Forever Youngstown” initiative, pledging up to $1 million commitment to downtown businesses
At the musical extravaganza known as The Open, 7 17 Credit Union announced it is significantly expanding its commitment to Youngstown and downtown small business owners by launching an up to one million-dollar initiative to uplift the community beyond last Saturday’s successful event.
The Open was held to support downtown businesses that have struggled over the past few years, starting with the pandemic and subsequent road closures, restructuring, and infrastructure improvements. Then, the natural gas explosion happened in May which brought additional devastating challenges to the area’s commerce.
“When we began to look at how 7 17 could help, it was obvious we could make a difference by partnering with the city, JAC Live, our Chamber, and other leaders who have been such powerful advocates for years,” said 7 17 Credit Union President and CEO John Demmler. “Being the presenting sponsor of The Downtown Open aligns with our mission to help people live better lives financially and support the communities we serve. But it can’t end with one event. We knew we had to push this one step further to create lasting change,” Demmler added.
In furthering 7 17’s commitment to the revival of downtown, the credit union will provide up to one million dollars to be funneled back into our urban core. For every auto loan refinanced through 7 17, the credit union will give up to $250 in gift cards to support downtown businesses.
“We want to align ourselves with what our partners at Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, the Chamber, and others are doing to make lasting change and fulfill our purpose of supporting the communities we serve by banking on each other,” Demmler went on to say. “We intend to build upon the ‘Forever Youngstown’ campaign through 2025 with additional ways we can give back, so stay tuned.”

7 17 Credit Union Announces Major Initiatives to Support Housing in Warren and the Mahoning Valley
7 17 Credit Union announced today two new initiatives aimed at improving housing access and affordability in the Mahoning Valley, with a specific focus on Warren.
The announcement was made by John Demmler, President and CEO of 7 17 Credit Union and Chair of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber Housing Council. These initiatives are in direct response to recommendations outlined in the Eastgate Council of Regional Governments’ Housing Study, which calls on employers to play a more active role in addressing the region’s housing challenges.
New Mortgage Incentives for 7 17 Credit Union Employees
Effective immediately, 7 17 Credit Union employees will receive enhanced benefits when purchasing a local home through the credit union:
- 1.00% mortgage rate discount for homes purchased anywhere in Trumbull County, where 7 17 has been headquartered since 1957.
- 2.00% mortgage rate discount (down to the Applicable Federal Rate) for employees purchasing a home within the city limits of Warren.
In addition, for employees buying in Warren, 7 17 Credit Union will waive fees for application, loan origination, credit report, processing and documents, appraisal, and title insurance.
“These new incentives reflect our commitment to helping our employees live better financial lives while also investing in the communities we serve,” said Demmler. “We’re proud to lead by example in showing how employers can support housing stability and neighborhood revitalization.”
Fee Waivers for 7 17 Workplace Partner Employees
In a second initiative, 7 17 Credit Union will now offer mortgage fee waivers to all employees of its 1,100+ Workplace Partners across the region. All of the fee waivers for the 7 17 employee Warren purchase program will also apply to the Workplace Partner employee program.
This benefit, which can save borrowers approximately $3,500 on an average $130,000 home purchase, is part of 7 17’s long-standing mission to promote financial wellness and community development.
“I remember buying my first home nearly 30 years ago and being shocked by the thousands of dollars in unexpected bank fees,” Demmler said. “With this program, we’re making homeownership more affordable and accessible — because when we bank with purpose, we can build a stronger community.”

Companies that are not currently Workplace Partners but are interested in learning more about the program are encouraged to contact Dorian Smith, Senior Vice President of Business Development at 7 17 Credit Union at 330/372-8333.
7 17 one of only 17 financial institutions in Ohio earning top spot for the new year
WARREN, OH – 7 17 Credit Union has been nationally recognized one of "America’s Best Regional Banks and Credit Unions 2024.” The study, which analyzed more than 9,400 banks and regional credit unions across the United States, awarded only the top 250 credit unions and top 250 regional banks. In order to receive such a top designation, the banks and credit unions had to first meet certain scoring criteria that look at stability, profitability, risk exposure during uncertain times, and the overall health of the organization.
Here is what Newsweek says about the benefits of a credit union like 7 17:
“As financial cooperatives owned by their members, they foster a sense of shared ownership and responsibility. This unique structure translates into a commitment to the financial well-being of its members, often resulting in lower fees, competitive interest rates, and a more flexible approach to lending. The community engagement of credit unions extends beyond financial transactions. Many credit unions actively contribute to local initiatives, reinforcing their role as integral community partners.”
7 17 President and CEO John Demmler remarked how proud he is of the credit union, “It is an honor that the strength of 7 17, driven by our commitment to our members and the broader community is being recognized nationally.”

Youngstown City Schools Credit Union Merges with 7 17
WARREN – 7 17 Credit Union welcomed more than 1,100 Youngstown City Schools Credit Union (YCSCU) members who have officially joined the 7 17 Credit Union family after a successful merger. They join nearly 100,000 individuals in the Youngstown and greater Mahoning Valley community that are already members of 7 17.
YCSCU, like many smaller credit unions and banks, found operating in a competitive marketplace increasingly challenging due to the cost and complexity of technology and regulatory compliance. Their credit union’s board of directors decided to seek a strong merger partner in order to best serve members long term. They found that in 7 17 Credit Union – from an unwavering commitment to member respect since 1957, to an expanded offering of financial services and products.
7 17 CEO and President John Demmler shares his enthusiasm for the merger, saying, “We are excited to officially welcome the members of YCSCU. This partnership is powered by our mutual desire to offer expanded service to our members, and a heartfelt commitment to financial inclusion, this merger reaffirms our commitment to Youngstown and to the education community. It is another big step as 7 17 continues to deepen its ties to the Youngstown area.”
All YCSCU members will now have access to expanded products and services, the latest digital banking technology, and premier member service at 13 branch locations; including a call center, a top-rated mobile app, and more than 30 ATMs and PTMs. Given 7 17’s current branch network and the limited access to the YCSCU office inside the Youngstown Early College High School, that office will be closed as of November 30, 2023.
The merger was finalized December 1, 2023 with approval of the Ohio Department of Financial Institutions and the National Credit Union Administration. With the completion of the merger, 7 17 has a total of nearly 120,000 members and $1.6 billion in assets.
7 17 donates $4,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Portage County for ReStore truck
Portage County, OH – 7 17 Credit Union is proud to present Habitat for Humanity a check for $4,000 to help purchase another ReStore truck in order to keep doing the critical work they do in that county, to ensure the future of all residents. Habitat for Humanity of Portage County was awarded a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency – but needed additional matching funds locally to be able to utilize it. That’s when 7 17 Credit Union stepped in to help support them. The ReStore trucks serve Portage County by keeping recyclable items out of landfills.
The ReStore is an arm of Habitat for Humanity of Portage County. It is full of things to refurbish, remodel, renew, and redefine your home. They do so by taking in donations of new and nearly new building supplies, furniture, and appliances – and sell those at huge discount prices. It helps keep usable materials from going into landfills too. Habitat uses those very proceeds to build and rehab houses in Portage County for those in need of decent and affordable housing.
7 17 has made it their mission to help the communities we serve. The ReStore vehicle will be co-branded and will include the 7 17 logo alongside Habitat for Humanity’s logo. “This is really about capturing the idea of people helping people and we could not be more pleased to be a driving force for positive change,” said Gary Soukenik, President and CEO of 7 17 Credit Union.
“The 7 17 Credit Union donation means Habitat for Humanity of Portage County can purchase a new truck so they can continue to work with local families to build, improve, and preserve the idea of ‘home’ for hundreds of families a year,” said Habitat ReStore Manager, Bradley Knife. “We could not do what we do for residents in this area without the generous support of community-minded organizations like 7 17.”
